Ampthill Armistice100

03 July 2018

Unveiling of the WW1 Interpreation board at Ampthill Festival Gala day on 1st July.

The Town Mayor's speech:

'Before we get started on the officially unveiling I would like to start with some thanks.
Firstly I would like to express the councils gratitude to the team of local experts led by Stephen Hartley and including John Hele, Kelvin Horton and Kevan Fadden who have spent hours and hours researching the camp. They have provided a rich level of detail which has certainly brought this part of our history to life.
I would also like to express the Councils continued thanks to the Duke of Bedford for allowing the use and reproduction of the families archive material.
This year is the centenary of The Armistice.
This board tells the World War one story of the Bedfordshire Training depot and the Ampthill Command depot that followed.
I am delighted that some of the descendants of those brave men have been able to join us today.
The World War one centenary board compliments the Canadians one that was installed in November by the Cenotaph.
On behalf of the Town council and the people of Ampthill, I am pleased to unveil this board in memory of the Ampthill camp.'
