Ampthill Festival Proms 2018

Ampthill Festival Proms 2018

03 July 2018

The Town Mayor's speech:

Good evening Ampthill.
Thanks for my very first fanfare, I may insist on having one whenever I enter a room from now on.
Apologies for my croaky voice, apparently, I know more Bananarama songs than I previously thought.
So welcome to Ampthill Park Proms, I would like to recognise the excellent work that the Festival committee do, remember this whole weekend is put together by volunteers for the people of Ampthill.
This year is special for a number of reasons………….
Firstly, it’s the Proms 10th Anniversary.
Secondly, tomorrow at 2.30pm I will be holding the largest water fight the town has ever seen, I should take this opportunity to apologies to parents of cubs and beavers in the town as they are going to lose quite badly.
Thirdly, it’s the 100 year anniversary of the end of the first world war, one of the roles that I have as Mayor is being Chairman of the Ampthill Armistice100 group. This group, again volunteers, has put together a programme of events that build to and aligns with the nations tribute of Battles over which takes place on Remembrance Sunday this year. Details of the events are in the programme for tonight, please look out for our stall tomorrow where we are trying to sell 67 giant poppies which will be displayed around the town in November.
One of the most powerful quotes I have read regarding remembrance is that “The living owe it to those who can no longer speak to tell their story for them”. This is what we will be trying to start at 3.30 tomorrow when we unveil a new interpretation board which tells the story of the Ampthill camp which was based in this very park.
Linking into this theme the first piece of music that will be performed is the Armistice Day Parade March, it gives me great pleasure to declare the 10th Anniversary Ampthill Proms in the park officially open. Please enjoy the evening.'
